The following programs are currently offered in the Selkirk region. Please check with the program contacts for actual dates and times as they run at different times throughout the year. The Calendar is also a good source of information about many of the programs listed here.

Parent & Children Programs

Baby Talk/ Rhyme Time/Stroller Fitness (Age 0-5 years)
Turn your walking time with baby into an indoor walking club (Sept to April) at the Selkirk Recreation Complex walking track. Enjoy walking with other moms and participating in leader lead anytime, anywhere exercises. Remember to bring a sturdy stroller with a brake and safety buckle. Each session begins with a "rhyming circle" - songs, rhymes and lullabies from 10:00 to 10:40 am. Please note - Children 3 and under must be in a stroller for the program.. Public Health nurses are available every 1st and 3rd Tuesday to consult on your baby's growth & development, feeding and any other postpartum concerns. Weigh and measure baby. No appointment is needed—just drop in!

Babytime at the Library (Age: 0-2)
Join us for singing, finger plays and rhymes in our baby program. ~. No Cost. (10 week program).
Time: Sunday 3:00 - 3:30 pm. ~Friday 10:00 - 10:30 am.

Daerwood Family Programming - The Kinderstart program is geared to children 4-5 years of age to children who will be starting Kindergarten in September.  The program starts in April.

Get Set Learn Afterschool (GSL)
Get Set Learn Afterschool is a family literacy program for parents and their school-aged and preschool children. GSL seeks to recognize, encourage and promote *the rich & diverse multi-cultural experiences and backgrounds of families, *strong family relationships of learning together, *understanding of Essential Skills and how they are embedded in all we do, wherever we are, *transition of learning from the program experience to home, school, the wider community and the workplace.

Happy Tots (Age: 0-5)
A group experience for parents, their babies and young children, which focuses on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, songs, and stories together. Priority will be given to parent living in the HTS catchment area. No cost.

Kinderstart
A program for students (and their parents) who will be entering Kindergarten in September 2011. ~The Kinderstart program is based on developmentally appropriate practices for the 3.8 - 4.5 year old. All areas of a child’s development are addressed with activities designed to support them.It increases the possibility of successful transition from home to school. No cost.

Nova House Parent-Child Program
This Parent-Child program makes use of Triple P, Attachment Theory and other parenting programs; dependent on the needs of the parent/child. Much of our parenting program relies on “teaching moments” as we are able to see and role model best practices in parent-child involvement during their stay at Nova House.

Rhyme and Reason (Age: 0-5 and parent/caregiver)
It is a group experience for parents and their children focusing on the pleasure and power of using rhymes and songs together.

Rhyme at Night (0-5 with parent or caregiver)
Join us at the Gaynor Family Regional Library in Selkirk for a fun and interactive evening. This free program is aimed at parents and caregivers with 0 to 5 year old children that may be unable to attend daytime programs. Siblings are welcome to participate. Together we will sing, rhyme, march, stretch and have a light snack. It is also a chance to share with others, get pertinent community information and learn early numeracy/literacy skills. Fall and Spring sessions available. Free 10 week program. Registration is required.

Rock N Read (Age: 0-5)
This program is a hands-on experience for parents and their children. Participants learn rhymes, fingerplays, book sharing and book-making techniques.

Selkirk Rhyme & Reading Circle (Age: 0-5)
Parents/Caregivers enjoy a fun, FREE program for your children 0 to 5 yrs. Join us for rhymes and songs, snack time,
story time, book sharing, craft time and a parents corner. No cost. Registration required.

Storytime at the Library
The program involves reading, lending of materials, storytelling, creating crafts, painting and learning topics like weather and events. The program provides parents with an opportunity to share experiences and access library materials.

WEE Play
A parent and child together play program. Parent led, staff supported. No registration required. No cost.

Whole Baby Love - (For pregnant and post natal parents with infants up to one year of age)
A program promoting healthy infant development. Child care for toddlers is provided. No registration required. No Cost.
Car seat inspections available with an appointment.

Wiggle, Giggle & Munch (Age: 1-5 year olds and their parent/caregiver)
A physical activity and nutrition program for preschoolers and their parents, with ample opportunities for children to develop their gross motor skills. The program runs three times a year throughout the school year, in one month blocks.
No cost.

Parenting Children on the Autism Spectrum
This program will focus on enhancing the understanding of the challenges parents, caregivers and family face.  We will explore ten specific issues children with autism encounter through the reading of the best selling parenting book “Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew”.  LLocation: Student Services Centre, 211 Main St., Selkirk

Practical Parenting
A six week class for parents to learn and share information, strategies, techniques and challenges. Some sessions will include Triple P Parenting material. Spots are limited.

Triple P
A parenting program that helps parents strengthen their knowledge, skills, and confidence in dealing with the challenges of raising healthy, happy children. The program recommends simple and small changes that can produce big results in families. No cost.

Family & Friends Lending Library
Establishment of a lending library of reading materials for families and friends of children with special needs. This will include books for parents, siblings, children with special needs, extended family, caregivers and friends.

Stroller Fitness for Baby & Me (Age 0-5 years)

have a child in a stroller or infant carrier in order to participate in the walking portion of the program. (10:45)
Siblings are welcome to attend and can either stay with the childminder for crafts and playtime (must be 2yrs or up) or
walk with Mom (must be in stroller if under 3 yrs of age).
The walking track can be cool so please dress yourself and baby accordingly.
No registration is required—just drop in!

Red Run (Selkirk Imagination Library)
The Imagination Library program supports children’s language and literacy and prepares them for school by gifting every child enrolled in the program with a free, age appropriate book every month until the child turns five.

Public Skate (St. Andrews)
Anyone on the ice, 17 years old and under, helmets are mandatory. Anyone 18 years and over, helmets are strongly encouraged.
Please remember, for the safety of everyone during Public Skating, no hockey sticks/pucks or chairs are allowed on the ice. Thank you for your cooperation.
Skate at your own risk. No cost.

Parent Child Programs

These programs are designed to:
· Help parents learn about their young child's development
· Provide hands-on learning that is active and fun
· Promote good nutrition and cost-effective meal planning
· Support parents who want to help their child learn the early reading readiness skills needed for success in life.
· Provide necessities such as transportation and childcare so that parents of young children can be involved in our programs.
· Give parents of young children a chance to meet, share, and learn from each other.
